In September, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology issued a report recommending that courts stop using pattern matching forensic science until there can be scientific verification of the techniques. Included in pattern matching techniques are ballistics comparison, bite-mark identification and fingerprint identification techniques. Attorney General Loretta Lynch has refused to implement the recommendations, stating that the FBI has already taken great strides in strengthening the forensic sciences they use, including investment in research and reviewing closed cases. However, the FBI has previously been the center of controversy for using unreliable forensic science techniques. Even more problematic is the fact that the FBI lends its services to many local law enforcement agencies and often trains experts that go on to work for law enforcement agencies across the country.
