An independent investigation found that the Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children forensic lab did not meet forensic-testing standards for hair-strand drug and alcohol testing. As a result, ten years’ worth of results are being questioned as valid. These labs results were used in countless child-protection proceedings and criminal proceedings. A commissioner has been appointed to assist individuals who may have been affected by the flawed hair-strand testing. Officials hope this development will lead courts to reexamine how they look at forensic evidence, and that the bare minimum standards for testing will be reviewed.
